Unlock More Time

May 21, 2024

As a small business owner, time is one of your most valuable assets. But how often do you find yourself wondering where all the time went? If you're like many entrepreneurs, the answer is probably "too often." To help you gain control over your schedule and boost your productivity, I want to introduce you to a fantastic tool: Toggl.

Why Time Tracking Matters

Tracking your time is crucial for understanding how efficiently you're working. Think of it this way: if your goal is to lose weight, the first step is knowing how much you're consuming. Similarly, if you want to find more personal time away from your business, you need to know how you're spending your time. Many of us don’t realize how much time we waste or spend on tasks that don’t drive our business forward. By understanding your time usage, you can make necessary changes to focus on what truly matters.

The Toggl Challenge

Here's a quick challenge for you: For the next 3-5 days, use Toggl to log your daily activities. It's easy to use and can provide some eye-opening insights. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Download Toggl: Available on desktop and mobile, Toggl is a versatile tool that fits seamlessly into your workflow.
  2. Set Up Projects and Tasks: Break down your work into different projects and tasks. This will help you see exactly where your time is going.
  3. Track Your Time: Start the timer whenever you begin a task and stop it when you're done. Be honest and diligent – the more accurate your data, the more useful the insights.
  4. Review Your Data: At the end of the tracking period, review your data to identify patterns and areas where you can improve.

Conduct a Time Audit

I've also created a free download to help you conduct a time audit and reclaim your time. You can download the time audit exercise here.

Making Necessary Changes

Once you've gathered your data, it's time to make some changes. Here are a few tips to get started:

  • Eliminate Time Wasters: Identify activities that don’t add value to your business and find ways to minimize or eliminate them.
  • Prioritize High-Impact Tasks: Focus more on tasks that drive your business forward. Delegate or outsource lower-priority tasks if possible.
  • Set Clear Goals and Boundaries: Establish clear work hours and goals to help you stay on track and avoid overworking.

By understanding and optimizing how you spend your time, you can work more efficiently, grow your business, and find more personal time outside of work.

Give the Toggl challenge a try and let me know how it works for you. I’d love to hear about your experience and any changes you decide to make. And don’t forget to check out the time audit exercise for a deeper dive into your time management.
