Letting Go Without the Guilt: How to Step Back from Your Business

Oct 14, 2024

This topic came up during a 1:1 client call this week, and it reminded me how common it is for business owners to feel guilt when stepping back from their business. For years, I carried the weight of that guilt myself. I didn’t want my staff to think I was lazy, I didn’t want them to feel neglected, and I certainly didn’t want them to resent me for not being there 24/7. I had extremely high expectations for my team and worried that my absence might impact their productivity. And yes, some employees even questioned where I was because they were so used to seeing me in overdrive. The shift wasn’t easy—for me or for them.

But here’s the thing: that guilt held me back, and it kept me working in my business when I needed to be working on it. As entrepreneurs, our businesses often feel like extensions of ourselves. It’s natural to feel like stepping away means losing control. But the truth is, this guilt often stems from perfectionism or the fear that the business won’t run as smoothly without us. This mindset can be incredibly limiting, especially if you’re looking to grow and scale.

The first step in overcoming this guilt is to shift your mindset. I had to start thinking about stepping back not as abandoning my business, but as empowering my team to grow. I realized that delegating tasks didn’t mean I was losing control—it meant I was allowing the people I hired to show up and perform. That shift in thinking was crucial. Trusting your team is key. When you delegate, you’re showing them that you believe in their abilities, and that’s powerful. I had to remind myself that stepping back was not a sign of weakness, but a sign of trust and growth.

Another way I began to let go of guilt was by setting clear expectations. High standards are important, but they need to be communicated effectively. I made sure my team knew exactly what I expected of them and gave them the tools they needed to succeed. Clear communication alleviated the fear that things would fall apart in my absence. When expectations are clear, you can confidently step away knowing that the business will continue to run smoothly.

It’s also important to start small. If stepping back feels overwhelming, begin by delegating smaller tasks. Over time, you’ll build the confidence to hand off more responsibilities. It’s a gradual process, and that’s okay. I didn’t let go all at once; I started with things I knew my team could handle and gradually moved to bigger projects.

The hardest part for many business owners is overcoming the mental block of feeling guilty for not being involved in every aspect of the business. But I found that the more I stepped back, the more my business grew. It wasn’t just about delegating tasks—it was about making space for myself to focus on the bigger picture. Instead of managing every detail, I could step into the role of visionary, working on the long-term goals and direction of the business.

It wasn’t just the business that thrived. By stepping back, I was able to scale my business and eventually sell it at a profit, while spending more time with my family. I could focus on the things that mattered most, both in my personal life and in my business. And that’s really what it comes down to—creating the freedom to live the life you want.
